Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many dialects are available through these books?
A: Currently, there are 5; Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese, Hainanese and Hakka.
Q: Are these books for children only?
A: No, they are not only limited to children only. It is also for adults who have lost touch with dialects and would like to have a “refresher course”.
Q: Are pronunciations in the books the correct way to speak in those dialects?
A: Since the books strive to reconnect individuals to dialects that are spoken colloquially, there may not be absolute “right or wrong” to many of those words. If, however, you are unclear about how words should be pronounced, check with your parents, neighbours or elderly whom you know.
Q: Is there a read-along CD that accompanies the books?
A: It is intentional that a CD is not included. This is to encourage the reader to check the pronunciations with his/her parents and/or grandparents so as to increase inter-generational interactions and bonding.
